NICE Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1877 TRAPDOOR Rifle
The Original 45-70 GOVT, Made in 1878
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1878 by Springfield Armory. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
This specimen is marked “U.S./MODEL/1873” on the breech. The lock is marked “Eagle/U.S./Springfield”. The left side of the barrel bears the “V/P/Eagle head” proof marks. The left side of the stock bears the inspector cartouche of Erskine S. Allen with a date of 1878. The bayonet comes with the original scabbard with brass hanger marked “US”.
The overall condition is near fine. The barrel bears 60% of the original blue finish. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in very nice shape with a few old handling marks and a visible cartouche. The bore is bright and sharp. The action is excellent, strong and crisp. Here is a very nice US government issue rifle from the Indian Wars-era that would be great to collect and shoot!
