Circa 1899 S&W .38 Safety HAMMERLESS Revolver
With Blue Finish and Hard Rubber Grips
Here we present a Smith & Wesson Safety Hammerless 4th Model Revolver, manufactured circa 1899 in Springfield, Massachusetts. They were also known as the “New Departure” or the “Lemon Squeezer”, the latter due to the safety bar on the backstrap. This little revolver holds 5 shots of .38 S&W. It was designed to meet the defensive needs of citizens and law enforcement in the late 19th Century. This is a top break design with an automatic ejector, hammerless design and grip safety. These features made it great for pocket carry.
This S&W Revolver features a blued finish with hard rubber grips. The top of the barrel is marked “SMITH&WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS U.S.A./PAT’D MAY 11.80, OCT.2.83.2.AUG.4.85.OCT.11.87. FEB.14.88. APR.9.89.Jun.3.90”.
The overall condition is good. Strong traces of the original blue finish are present with a dark gray patina throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The serial numbers match. The hard rubber grips are smooth with wear. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent. Here is a great little Smith & Wesson revolver from the turn of the 20th Century!
