Antique Marlin Model 1889 rifle in 38-40 Winchester caliber, serial # 71268, manufactured in 1892 per Cody Museum information. Special order rifle with 28" full octagon barrel, 4" longer than standard, other features of full magazine and crescent butt are standard. Retains 75% original factory blue on barrel and receiver. Mag tube has faded to about 50% with a mix of patina and plum. Original Marlin rear sight retains 80% original bright blue. Front sight is a Lyman "Jack" with ivory bead. Action seems to function properly but the lever droops slightly. Bore is very good, an 8 of 10, with strong rifling all the way to the muzzle and only scattered black powder fouling. Have a competent gunsmith check it if you intend to shoot it. Stocks are in very good shape, never sanded or refinished and retain much of the original reddish-brown finish and varnish. No extra holes either, normal dings and scratches, with a small hairline in the butt stock coming off the lower tang. All numbers on butt stock, tang and receiver match. Significant ding to outer edge & face of muzzle that does not affect the exit hole, still mikes at correct diameter and should not affect shooting. Hard to find these with any condition so this is a nice find.
