Description:
Sale Pending.  Early Smith and Wesson Model One, First Issue Tip-Up Revolver in .22 caliber.  This was not only Smith and Wesson's first attempt at manufacturing a revolver, but also the first cartridge gun in the world.  Today, this little pistol is the Great Grandfather to every cartridge gun....it all started with the Model One in 1857.  Total production for this model was only 11,671 and ended in 1860 when S&W introduced what we know today as the Model One, 2nd Issue.  These First Issue revolvers can be broken down into 6 distinct variants or types as Smith and Wesson made several design improvements along the way.  This particular revolver is a Type 6 which is the last and most common variant.  The serial number is in the 6200 range and would have likely been produced in July 1859 according to my sources.  The Cylinder has the historic 1855 Rollin White Patent which gave Smith and Wesson exclusive rights to the manufacture of bored through cylinder which effectively gave them a monopoly on the cartridge revolver market for the next 16 years.

Being a Cartridge Gun, Smith and Wesson advertised the fact that their revolvers were easy to load, fire, and that the ammunition they used (which was a primitive copper-cased .22 loading with black powder) was waterproof.  This made an ideal back-up weapon for thousands of soldiers during the Civil War and because the fact that its manufacture pre-dated the war by 1-4 years, many of these early First Issues were used by Southerners as well as Northern Troops.  See photos.

Overall, this revolver grades to NRA Antique Very Good Plus Condition with 35% original blue remaining on the barrel, approximately 15% original blue on the cylinder, and 15% original silver plating on the brass frame...mostly located on the gripstraps and protected areas.  Original wood grips are numbered to the gun with some original varnish remaining.  Never sanded or refinished...respectable and good wood to metal fit.  The cryptic assembly numerals are all matching on the barrel, cylinder, and frame.  Sharp Smith and Wesson Barrel Address and early 1st Issue Patent Dates are all there on the circumference of the cylinder.  It also has the correct two piece hammer and being a Type 6, it has the ratchet on the rear face of the cylinder.  Action is in good working order and bore is good.   Nice original example of one a scarce and historic technological advance in Firearms.

Note:  This is not designed to withstand the pressures of Modern .22 smokeless ammunition. Sale Pending.
