CASED, ENGRAVED Antique JOSEPH BENTLEY Revolver

Here we present an antique Joseph Bentley Patent Double Action Percussion Revolver, manufactured circa the 1850s in Birmingham, England. This revolver design was the result of the work of Phillip Webley and John Bentley, who each held their own patents and were both very influential in the development of the revolver as we know it today. These revolvers were then produced by several different makers in Birmingham, England, with several design variations. This one has a safety in the form of a hammer block, operated by that little tab at the top rear of the hammer. One other very distinct feature is the turn screw style of ramrod, which is very scarce when one considers how prevalent the lever type was in both Britain and the United States.
This revolver and case were retailed by Payton & Walsh, located at 44 George Street, Perth Scotland. The business had many names and owners through the years but was only known as Paton & Walsh from 1854-1858.
The right side of the frame is marked “BENTLEY’S PATENT NO. 424”. The top of the barrel is marked “PATON & WALSH PERTH MAKERS TO H.R.H. PRINCE ALBERT”. The case is lined in nice blue felt. The set includes an oiler bottle, wooden rammer, nipple wrench, cast bullets, and small powder flask. There are also a few pieces of correspondence regarding this set, most notably with Anthony Taylerson, co-author of The Revolver, 1818-1865.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a gray patina. The markings are legible. The grips are in good shape. The bore is clear and bright with strong rifling. The action on this revolver is excellent.
