Description:
General Specs: W & C Scott, Year 1882, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 5oz,  IC/LM, LOP 14 1/16", DAH 2 5/8", DAC 1 13/16"
Serial Number: 31342

William Scott was a Birmingham gunmaker that began his own trade name as early as 1834 with the opening of his firm “William Scott Gunmaker”.  By 1840 his brother Charles joined him, and by 1858 his two sons, hence the moniker “W & C Scott and Sons”.  They maintained London showrooms from 1872  until 1899, and that is the reason for the London address on the barrels.  Known as a gunmaker of the highest quality, the Scott firm and later the Webley and Scott merged group supplied parts and services to virtually all of the best London gunmakers.  This gun, sn31342 built in 1882, is a great example of the company’s product, having delivered 136 years of service and remains in fully functional, tight, sound condition ready for another century of use.  The gun is in remarkable condition, with superb wood-to-metal fit of its nicely figured English walnut stock, no cracks, splits or repairs to the wood at all,  near perfect screws, action tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun, and the 30” Damascus barrels choked IC/LM have very good shiney bores with only a light scattering of small pits here and there.  The minimum barrel wall thickness measures over 30 thou at the thinnest on both barrels, and the area immediately forward of the forcing cones is a robust 130 thousandths, with the measurement 9” up from the breech measuring 75 thousandths.  The barrels are sound and very useable with RST Shells or other low pressure 1 1/8oz. loads or less.  Most of these antique hammer guns have a lot of drop at the heel and comb, making them hard for today’s shooters to shoot instinctively.  Fortunately, this gun not only has nicely figured walnut, the dimensions are great at 14 1/16” x 2 5/8” x 1 11/16” x 1/8” cast off.  The mechanics are excellent with strong springs, crisp triggers, rebounding hammers, all in great shape.  Even the engraving is superb with perfect fine English scroll engraving embellishing the receiver and forend parts.  What a great gun for vintage sporting events or for your upland hunting with a classic English hammer gun! Thanks for looking at our fine shotguns and sporting arms.
