Description:
SOLD! This is one of the nicest early production Winchester Model 1892's we've had in a long time.  It's early production in the 21,000 serial range and was probably shipped from Winchester around 1893.  It's a standard sporting rifle in desirable 44-40 WCF with 24'' octagon barrel.  This is the configuration everyone wants, the condition everyone is trying to find, and early antique production that was built at the Zenith of Winchester Quality for the Model 1892 in the early 1890's. It has the early high polish Winchester blue on the frame, back when the barrels and magazine tubes were rust blued by hand, the case colored hammer, lever, and buttplate, and the nitre blued loading port and ejection spring.  The light colored walnut with its original varnish (about 80% remaining with no darkening from dirt or oil) gives great contrast to all the original finish which is 95% on the frame, 95% on the barrel, and 90% on the magazine tube.  Lever and hammer are case colors are getting smoky and silvering but still show some patches of descent discernable original case colors.  See photos. Colors on Buttplate are mostly silver. It just has a great look about it and the quality back then was just superb.  Side by side, this will put a 1920's vintage Model 1892 in the same configuration and condition to shame. This one is 100% original down to the smallest screw with the early correct Victorian Era decorative dipped hammer border, the 1884 Browning Patent Date on the upper tang instead of the barrel, and the early barrel address and caliber marking at the 12 O'Clock position on the top flat.  The sights are also original with the standard semi-buckhorn rear and the front with German silver blade and NO set screw...correct up into the mid-1890's. The action is nice and smooth.  The bore is Very Good showing light oxidation and strong rifling throughout. No rings or bulges.   Nice screws.  Excellent markings and edges.  Perfect wood to metal fit with no chips, cracks, extra holes or repairs.  Nice early examples like this one in the right configuration don't come around very often.  Pre-1898 Antique.
