The pommel has the face like old man of the North , with a castle as the pommel cap, and a women statue as the back part of the grip ,standing on a pedestal with a union shield ,super ornate. The brass grip is engraved with flowers, and u.s. shield , the basket is a brass cast eagle ,that is heavily carved ,all the hangers and drag are ornately cast with flags, pikes,cannon drums ,bugles, cherubs hold Union for ever, liberty hat, world globe, all the hanger rings are wreathes. The gold wash is every where up and down the blade '' One and Inseparable'' motto on the blade the other side with the eagle and U.S., even the collar on the scabbard is cast and ornate that the blade slips into, fits perfect . The easy read presentation reads ''PRESENTED =TO= LIENT COL. W. D. SMITH ACTG. INSPR.GENL D.OF N.O. BY OFFICERS SERVING IN THE DEFENSES N.O. 1864. This sword was bought in the 1960's and is in top quality shape one of the true untouched beauty, near impossible to find in this condition now a days.
