Description:
Offered here is a near mint Springfield Model 1842 Rifled & Sighted Musket. Originaly manufactured as a .69 Caliber smoothbore musket in 1853 it was modified circa 1855 to rifle the bore, add a long range adjustable ladder rear sight, a new iron blade front sight, and cup the head of the original smoothbore ramrod to accomodate the elongated .69 caliber mine' bullet. This example is in near mint condition with all the iron parts bright clean steel with no rust pitting. There are no evident deep abrasive scratches in the metal, the barrel surface is very smooth, clean bright steel with no pitting at the breech or on the bolster. Barrel has clear V, P, and eagle head  proofs at the breech. Both the barrel tang and the tail of the lock plate bear matching 1853 dates. Very sharp Springfield and federal eagle stampings on the lock plate. Mechanics are very crisp and tight. All of the iron mounts are very smooth clean bright steel with sharp edges. U.S. is stamped on the buttplate tang. The oil finished black walnut stock is in exceptional condition, never sanded or cleaned with a clean uniform medium dark walnut color showing no wear from field use. The stock has very sharp edges about the lock, counter plane and ramrod channel and a deep sharp and correct JS cartouche on the counter plane. All screws are fine condition and none buggered. The rifled bore has good sharp clean rifling its entire length and the percussion cone is also fine. The gun is not absolutely mint, but would still be very hard to improve on for condition.
