Description:
This John William Edge, serial no. 1725, was built about 1865 and is in excellent original condition, showing only an old reblacking of the barrel. It still has all three of its original sights, with the staff sight numbered to the rifle. The caliber is .451", which was the standard for English target rifles ot the era. The nine lands and grooves measure, respectively .450" and .461". The barrel has a one in eighteen R. H. twist, with rounded rifling and is 35 3/16" long from the breach plug foreward and weighs 7 lbs. The bore is excellent. The complete rifle, with the three sights in place, weighs 9 lbs 13 oz. Length of pull is 14" to a checkered steel butt plate. Overall length is 52 1/4". One interesting note; the slot in the front sight insert is only .006" wide.This is the only long range J. W. Edge target rifle I have seen and the workmanship is of the finest English quality that one would expect from this era.
