Description:

ANTIQUE Colt US “Artillery” Model 1873 SAA w LETTER

With BOTH Colt and KOPEC Letters

Here we present an antique Contract Colt Single Action Army Revolver Artillery Model, frame made in 1874. The Colt factory letter that accompanies this revolver states that this was sent to Springfield Armory on November 23, 1900 in a lot of 50 revolvers to be cleaned, remodeled, and have the barrel cut to 5-1/2 inches. This revolver also comes with a John A. Kopec letter. Kopec is an author and historian who studies Colt revolvers specifically and no one has a better reputation for being able to summarize a given revolver’s story. This revolver, being of mixed numbers, required a lengthy explanation and he does so quite nicely. He surmises that the frame of this revolver may well have been issued to Troop C of the 5th Cavalry during the Wild West’s most colorful period. He also states that the backstrap may have been on a revolver that served with the iconic Rough Riders during the Spanish-American War. He draws attention to two “kill notches” on the bottom of the left grip. Visit the listing at ancestryguns if you are having trouble reading the letters on this venue. The Artillery or Springfield Armory Model of the SAA is a period (1895-1903) armory or factory refinished gun to extend U.S. military service. Only about 17,000 of these refurbished guns were completed. In all but the rarest variant of the already rare Artillery Model, the serial numbers will be mixed.  Many of these saw action in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War.

The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The underside of the barrel has inspector marks “R.A.C.” for Rinaldo A. Carr. The left side of the frame has patent dates of 1871 and 1872. The left side of the frame is also marked “U.S.” Cylinder is proofed “P”.

The overall condition is very good. 15% of the original blue finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The grips are in good shape. The bore is in great shape, bright with good rifling. The action on this revolver is excellent. Here is a revolver with the whole package: tons of history, documentation from the Colt archive and expert John Kopec, even two “kill notches” in the grip. Here is a heck of a gun!
