Description:
General Specs: Colt, Year 1889, .44-40, ANTIQUE
Serial Number: 128650

The Colt Single Action Army was introduced in 1873 and has been in production through 3 generations since introduction, running through 2012 or so.  The most desirable and interesting SAA’s to collectors are the pre-war guns referred to as the “1rst Generation” Colt SAA.  These guns were made in a dizzying array of calibers, finishes, named models, and barrel lengths.  Used by the U.S. Military from its inception in 1873 until about 1896, and carried by outlaws, lawmen, cattleman, settlers, and merchants well into the early 1900’s, the Colt SAA is an iconic part of the American West (most reading this had their own holstered version growing up, complete with caps!).  Various barrel lengths were available, each often being named according to the barrel length as the “Cavalary” with 7 ½” barrel, the “Artillery” with its 5 ½” barrel, the “Civilian” or “Gunfigher” with the 4 ¾” barrel, and the “Sheriff” with a 4” barrel and no ejector rod.  The Colt we have here, sn128650 shipped in 1889 (antique), is a gun that Colt named the “Frontier Six-Shooter” and was chambered in the .44-40 cartridge, this one with the “Gunfighter” barrel length of 4 ¾”.  The gunmen of the early West loved this gun as they could use the same cartridge in Colt and their Winchester 1873 and travel with one cache of ammunition that worked well for shooting game and “two-legged critters” when needed.  Gunners of the West often wanted special options on their personal handgun and Colt would oblige with grips of ivory, mother of pearl, sometimes carved and ornate.  Some ordered their guns with factory engraving, nickel or even gold plating.  These special-order Colt SAA revolvers are extremely rare and costly in today’s collector’s market.  Some of these guns were customized after leaving the factory, as this SAA has been, with artful engraving and Mother of Pearl grips.  This revolver has been engraved with well executed bank note scroll and a stippled background.  The engraving covers about 80% of the Colt’s surface and is deeply cut and obviously engraved by a master-class engraver, though I cannot find a signature.  The Mother of Pearl grips fit the gun to perfection, which is usually NOT the case with aftermarket grips, and they have no cracks or chips.  The bore is very good, with light frosting, a few very light pits, and strong rifling remaining throughout.  The screws are all in good shape as well.  The action locks up tight as new and is perfectly timed.  The revolver was nickel plated and retains all the nickel finish with light handling marks.  This is the early black powder frame style, highly desirable in this condition, and is a gorgeous example of a Colt Frontier Six-Shooter.  Colt Archives is providing us a letter for this gun that will be included as part of the purchase price.  We have priced this gun to sell, so if you like the photos and description, don’t hesitate to make the call.  You will not be disappointed with this revolver.  Thanks for looking!
