Description:

PENNSYLVANIA Antique .40 Cal G.W. Wolf LONG RIFLE

Nice Half-Stock Long Rifle Circa 1850s

Here we present an antique Pennsylvania Half-Stock Long Rifle by G.W. Wolf, made circa the 1850s. This rifle bears the signature of the maker on the top flat of the fully octagonal barrel. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsman all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. This rifle would have been a fantastic rifle for putting game on the table or defending the homestead on the Frontier.

This rifle features a long, nearly 38-inch octagonal barrel in .40 caliber, a great and useful caliber for most purposes. The barrel is signed “G.W. WOLF”. The lock is marked “R.B.” with a small game scene. This rifle is also equipped with double set triggers and a small patch box. Hardware is of brass with a pewter fore end cap. The left side of the butt stock is decorated with a crescent moon and a teardrop shaped mounting. The flat of the muzzle is ringed with crosses.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is in very good shape with strong rifling under a thick layer of fine dust. The action on this rifle is excellent; set trigger must be utilized. Here is a fantastic example of early American gunsmithing from Pennsylvania!
