18th Century FRENCH Antique Flintlock EPROUVETTE
Flintlock Black Powder Tester
Here we present an antique French Flintlock Eprouvette, made in Paris circa the 18th Century. This would have been used to test black powder’s efficacy. The test takes the form of a flintlock pistol though, instead of a barrel, it is equipped with a basket to hold a sample of black powder over which is a stopper on an arm. The whole assembly pivots on a hinge. When the trigger is pulled, the flint scrapes sparks into the flash pan which ignites the sample of black powder. The explosion pushes the arm up so that the person testing the sample can read the numbers on the right side of the ratchet.
The lock reads “A PARIS”.
The overall condition is near fine. The iron parts have a dark even patina. Markings are clear. The stock is smooth and in great condition. The action is excellent.
