A bit of history. At the end of WWII the Mauser factory at Oberdorff was in the French controlled sector. The French had the Mauser factory design a .22 caliber training rifle for them. The Mauser people drew on previous Mauser 22 designs and made some slight modifications. The first ones where produced in the Mauser factory and had the Mauser logo on them. While still in production at the Mauser factory the MAS logo was added to the existing Mauser logo. The completed parts and manufacturing equipment where then moved to France where rifles where assembled until the existing supply of parts was used up. The production of the .22 trainer was resumed in France, first in Mulhouse, then in Saint Etienne. The first hundreds were assembled from German made parts and have combined Mauser/Mas markings, but all the others were from French made parts, with only Mas markings. The custom rifle you see here was built by the same gunsmith who built the .22 LR double rifle featured in The Double Gun Journal, Autumn 2000, Volume 11, Issue 3, page 69. “Bitten By A Hornet”.
