HEAVY Antique .50 CAL American TARGET Long Rifle
19th Century Half Stock Rifle w Peep Sight
Here we present an antique Heavy Barrel American Half Stock Rifle, manufactured circa 1850. This rifle was designed for target shooting and features a stout octagonal barrel in .50 caliber. It is equipped with an adjustable fine front post inside a protective hood with no provision for a barrel mounted rear sight. Instead there is a “lollipop” style aperture or peep sight that is threaded into the barrel tang and is adjustable by screwing in or backing out the threading. The lock is marked “JOSH GOLCHER”. Brass trigger guard and butt plate with a pewter fore end cap.
The overall condition is in near fine condition. The metal surfaces bear most of its thinning original blue finish. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great shape. The bore is near fine with reflective surfaces and sharp rifling. The action on this rifle is excellent, strong and crisp. This would make an excellent gun for the collector who likes to shoot.
