Description:

BRITISH Antique .577 ENFIELD-SNIDER MK III Rifle

Unit Marked to the 3rd Punjab Infantry

Here we present an antique British Enfield-Snider MK III Rifle, made in 1870 in England. The British military, like many militaries of the day, was in the process of updating its arsenal from single shot percussion muskets to breech-loading cartridge rifles. Rather than retire all of their existing muskets at once and choosing a completely new platform the government opted to adopt and install a breech-loading conversion. The result was still a large bore, single shot rifle, but it could be loaded much more quickly and efficiently than ramming a ball down from the front. They went on to see use throughout the world in colonies and commonwealth.

This MK III rifle was originally made and issued circa 1870 and it went on to see use in the hands of colonial troops. It is marked with three different acceptance marks, one of which is dated “1885”. There is a stamp on the left side of the butt stock “3rd P.I./160” for the 3rd Punjab Infantry.

The overall condition is good. There is strong blue finish around the area of the breech block and barrel. A light gray patina forming throughout. The markings are clear. The stock shows much use and remains solid. The bore is in great condition, bright with strong rifling. The action is strong. Here is a great British rifle with lots of history!
