TIP-UP Rifle Fantastic, Light and Popular in the Late 1800s Here we present an Antique J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. Tip-Up Rifle, manufactured in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts circa 1886-1888. Joshua Stevens worked for other New England gun makers between 1838 and 1864, including Samuel Colt, Eli Whitney, Cyrus Allen, Edwin Wesson, and the Mass. Arms Co. In 1864, Joshua Stevens started his own factory in Chicopee Falls, Mass. at the age of 50 with 2 partners, James Taylor and W. B. Fay. With the factory starting at the end of the civil war, many gun manufacturers went under due to the surplus of guns flooding in. This rifle was manufactured right around the time that Stevens Arms & Tool Company was becoming the largest producer of sporting firearms in the world. By 1915, Stevens was a leader in the American arms business as a maker of target and small game hunting guns. There are 16 models of the Stevens Tip-Up rifles, with models 1 through 6 and 15-16, which were referred to as “Crack Shot” rifles, having no forearms. These unusually well-made rifles were designed for hunting small game and for target purposes. There could hardly be a simpler rifle and action. This rifle is equipped with a very adjustable tang sight. Rear sight on the barrel was removed. The left side of the barrel is marked “J. STEVENS & CO CHICOPEE FALLS, MASS. PAT. SEPT.6.1864”. The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have a light gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The stock is in great shape. The bore is clean with good rifling. The action on this rifle is excellent, strong and crisp. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 24 inches. Caliber: .25 Rimfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
