Dimick Percussion Cape Gun, made circa the 1850s in St. Louis, Missouri. Horace Dimick was a contemporary of Jacob and Sam Hawken and a talented gun maker. He was born circa 1811 and raised in Vermont, then moved to Kentucky where, as a young man, he was a cabinet maker and upholsterer. At some point he began working as a gunsmith and by 1846 was well known nationally. He moved to Saint Louis, Missouri in 1849 and opened his shop with his brother in 1851. Incidentally, 1849 was the year that Jacob Hawken perished during the cholera epidemic. Nevertheless, Horace competed with Jacob’s brother, Sam Hawken, as well as other well-known St. Louis gunmakers of the time such as the Folsoms and the Albrights. They all seem to have had a good working relationship in spite of the competition. This is a good example of a combination rifle-shogun, which would have been very handy if you could only afford one gun. The rifle would allow medium to large game to be taken, while the shotgun would have been fantastic for fowl. St. Louis was the “Gateway to the West” and putting food on the table was paramount, as was defense from bandits and other hostiles. The left lock is marked “H.E.DIMICK & CO”. The right lock is marked “H.E.D.” The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is has a break under the right lock as the mainspring has come through it. Stock is otherwise solid and well worn. The bores are dark and dusty with a smooth shotgun bore on the right and well-rifled bore on the left. The shotgun bore is smooth and the rifle bore has visible rifling. The action is on functioning on the rifle side and mobile but without spring tension on the shotgun side. A very neat old SxS from the pioneer days in St. Louis! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 35-1/2 inches. Caliber: .51 caliber/10 Gauge Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
