Description:

BRITISH Antique ENFIELD-SNIDER Cavalry Carbine

Unit Marked British Imperial MK III Dated “1892”

Here we present an antique British Enfield Snider MK III Breech Loading Cavalry Carbine, made in 1870. This firearm saw the landscape everywhere the British had a presence in the 19th century. The list is quite significant: Ethiopia, Cape Colony, India, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The Enfield Snider was not only used worldwide but had a very long service life. It was adopted as the primary service weapon of the British Army in 1866, then was relegated to volunteer and militia forces beginning in 1874, then was pretty much solely in use by the British Indian Army into the 1890s.

The lock is marked with a British Royal Cipher for Queen Victoria and dated “1870”. The lock is marked “1870/ENFIELD”. The left side of the stock has been marked “F.A./1892”. The tang of the butt plate is marked “R 4/F/30”. The butt plate has a trap for the cleaning rod and it does indeed contain a two-piece cleaning rod. The left side of the barrel contains various British proof and acceptance markings. There remains a faint circular acceptance marking on the right side of the butt stock with “WD” and “ENFIELD” in it.

The overall condition is very good. Much of the original blue remains with a gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great shape. The bore is clear and bright with good rifling. The action on this carbine is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel 19-1/4 is inches.

Caliber: .577 Snider
