IVER JOHNSON “Defender” Spur Trigger Revolver
Iver Johnson “Suicide Special”
Here we present an antique Iver Johnson “DEFENDER” Spur Trigger revolver, made circa the 1890s. It is unclear how many of these were made, but similar iterations were made by many different companies in the late 19th century and they all had very colorful names. “Defender” belongs to this one, but others that we have seen are “Tycoon”, “Electric”, “Smoker”, “Yellow Jacket”, “Victor No. 1”, etc.
The top of the barrel is marked “DEFENDER”. Some call this genre of guns “Suicide Specials”, but we prefer “Spur Trigger”. Collecting all the different trade names is an excellent way to begin an antique collection, and many of these little .22 shorts are still operational!
The overall condition is near fine. The original nickel finish is 95% intact. The markings are clear and legible. The grips are in good shape with a chip at the toe. The bore is bright with good rifling. The action on this revolver is excellent, strong and crisp.
