Description:
Between 1910 and 1914 Peru purchased approximately 50,000 Model 1909 rifles from Waffenfabrik Mauser.  This was an attempt by the Peruvian Military to modernize it's military's main battle rifle with the very best rifle available.  The Model 1909 was essentially the export version of the German Military's Gewehr 98 Rifle.   The Model 1909 even shared the same unique "Lange Vizier" rear sight known today by collectors as the "ski jump sight" instead of the tangent leaf style rear sight common on most other South American military rifles.  The Model 1909 is fitted with a pistol grip Walnut stock without grasping grooves and the short style handguard.  The rifle has several provisions for sling attachment on the bottom of the rifle including a mounting location on the front of the trigger guard.  The upper H-shaped barrel band incorporates a parade hook for shortening of the sling, and the bayonet lug is H-shaped for the specially-made Peruvian Model S 98 Bayonet.  The action on this rifle is a superb design that is well-known for being extremely strong and reliable.  The receiver ring which is stamped with the Peruvian crest is different from the GEW 98 ring in that it is longer, with several other dimensions differing as well.  The bolt uses the famous non-rotating full-length Mauser extractor and the heavy 1904-style cocking piece.  This work of functional art is chambered in the 7.65x53 (Also known as the 7.65 Argentine) cartridge, which was required by the Peruvian Government in order to purchase the rifles.  The 7.65x53 cartridge was actually developed by Paul Mauser as a smokeless cartridge in 1889 and after several refinements including using a spitzer bullet, saw widespread military use particularly in South America.  The 7.65 Argentine has plenty of stopping power, pushing a 180 grain bullet at over 2500 fps.  This Peruvian Model 1909 is in excellent condition overall and has 100% original factory finish.  It is an all-matching gun except for the bolt, which is all-matching to itself but not the rifle.  The high polish factory blue finish on this rifle is beautiful.  It rates 95 to 97% with only some light handling marks and edge wear.  The "fire blue" finish on the bolt release, trigger, and action screws is in excellent shape overall and still spectacular looking.  It shows a consistent amount of light wear and handling marks as the standard blue finish.  The receiver ring and bolt are in absolutely beautiful shape.  Having been left "in the white" and lightly polished from the factory, they remain bright and clean today over 100 years later.  Only under close inspection can you find a few small light scratches/marks in the finish.  The factory stamped Peruvian crest is clean and crisp, as are all of the other Mauser factory stampings.  The bore in this Model 1909 is in mint like-new condition.  The rifling still has sharp lands and grooves and there are no visible imperfections whatsoever.  The original serial numbered stock is in remarkable condition.  The beautiful German-sourced Walnut is free from any cracks, chips, repairs, deep gouges, or major damage.  It has some minor dings and dents you would expect from a 100-plus year old rifle that was once stored in a military facility and then transported to the States many years ago.  All of the factory cartouches and inspector's stamps are clear and crisp, particularly the Mauser banner factory stamp and inspection proof stamp on the right side of the butt.  All of the controls and action on this rifle work 100% like the day it left the factory.  The action is smooth and precise and the bolt goes into battery perfectly.  We have no doubt that this rifle would be as accurate today as it was 109 years ago.  If you have been looking for a new addition to your military rifle collection that really has a "WOW" factory, this Peruvian contract Model 1909 Mauser would be an excellent choice.  We just don't see many military rifles this clean and without import stamps very often.
