Antique COLT Model 1877 “Lightning” .38 Revolver
Double Action Revolver Made in 1888
Here we present an antique Colt 1877 Lightning Double Action Revolver, made in 1888 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Model 1877 was Colt’s first venture into double action revolvers. It was quite successful, selling 166,849 from 1877 through 1909, primarily in .38 and .41 calibers. Nonetheless, there was some hesitation to move away from the single action mechanism, which had so proven itself. Famous adopters of the Lightning were William “Billy the Kid” Bonney and John Wesley Hardin, two legendary names of the American West.
This revolver is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.” Patent dates of 1871, 74 and 75 are located on the left side of the frame. The hard rubber grips bear the iconic rampant colt.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The numbers match. The trademarked grips are worn but in good shape. The bore is in very good condition. The action is excellent.
