Description:
Classic Civil War Confederate marked pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle. Caliber .577. Fires a 530 grain smooth sided Enfield Minie ball. Lock marked 1862 Tower, crown at rear without V R. Right side of breach stamped with initials J P. No British proof marks, no export rifles had proof markings. The bottom of the buttstock stamped "Whitehouse", the exporting company. Top rear of stock near buttplate tang is a small stamp. Below a crown are the letters S H C and the number 5. This indicates a Confederate purchase. Original nipple protector and chain. Manchester marked bayonette.Condition fine. Majority of the original bluing, some pitting on breach and a few deep marks on the stock. Very good bore. I've owned many P 53 Enfields, this example is the most accurate shooter in my collection. This rifle has been on loan to the Prospect House Civil War Museum in Battle Lake, Minnesota. A great piece of history in a war that solidified our nation.
