Description:
Sale Pending. This is a S&W Model One, 2nd Issue Pocket Revolver in .22 caliber. Manufactured 1860-1868. This one is in the 83,000 range which dates its manufacture to early 1866. The Model One was Horace Smith's and Daniel Wesson's first Revolver design and owns the distinction of being the world's first cartridge gun.  All cartridge guns can trace their ancestry back to this little 22 rimfire pistol.  The first issue Model Ones were manufacture from 1857-1860 which was followed by the second issue which featured a solid one-piece hammer design, flat-sided frame, and a larger removable side plate for easy access to the mechanics.  They were extremely popular during the Civil War as thousands of soldiers purchased them as their personal carry weapons.  This one was made just after the war and what's a little unusual about it is that its fully nickel plated.  To the best of my knowledge, Smith and Wesson only offered the 2nd Issue in Blued/Silver or full Silver plated.  Nickel plating took the world by storm when it became an widespread industry in the late 1860's and it was not uncommon for dealers to have their older weapons that had been sitting on their shelves for years following the Civil War off to be nickel plated.  Please see the photos I've included of the JH Johnston Gun Works Mail Order Catalog from the year 1873 where it offers this model for $11.00 in "full nickle".  They also plated over 2nd hand weapons to give them a new appearance.  One or the other, that is the case here as the nickel is very old and period to this revolver, not factory, but probably 1870's by a dealer out of the Northeast where most of the platers had set up shop.  The plating is about 95% and the markings are generally good and legible under the nickel.  The original rosewood grips are numbered to the frame and sub-assembly numbers on the barrel, cylinder, and frame are also matching.  The action cocks and indexes.  Barrel is tight to the frame.  Cartridge Extractor underneath the barrel is intact.  Bore is a little frosty from black powder but good overall.  Grips are solid with no cracks and 60% original varnish remaining. Note:  This is an early black powder era cartridge revolver. These were not designed to handle smokeless powder and therefore not safe to fire modern .22 ammunition.
