The Type I Springfield was produced only in 1863 and features screw clamped barrel bands, a flat faced hammer, and a two-leaf rear sight. The lock and hammer on this gun are beautifully case hardened with about 70% bright colors remaining. Lock is marked with the date, 1863 behind the hammer and the federal eagle with U.S. Springfield in front of the hammer. Lock mechanics are perfect. Barrel is marked with the date, 1863 on the top flat and the Springfiedl armory V, P, and eagle head proofs at the left barrel flat of the breech. A federal eagle is also stamped on the face of the nipple bolster. All iron mounts and the barrel are polished smooth semi-bright steel with no rust or pitting. The 2-leaf rear sight, band springs, and percussion nipple are blued. The .58 caliber barrel is rifled with 3 broad lands and grooves and the bore is clean and bright. The walnut stock is untouched, never sanded or cleaned and retains a nice patinaed uniform original oil finish medium brown color. There are two correct federal inspection cartouches on the left flat of the stock and the ramrod channel shows no splinters or chips. There is no damage to the stock and it retains good sharp edges. The gun retains all of its original fine screws, sling swivels and ramrod. Overall this is a fine example of the Type I Model 1863 Springfield rifle-musket. These fine guns were heavily used in many of the Civil War battles from 1863 to the end of the war. SOLD Antique: Yes |
