Description:
This is a second model 1876 Winchester rifle in excellent original condition. The rifle was manufactured in 1879 and features the early second model thumb print dust cover, and the separate dust cover slide screw fastened to the top of the receiver.  This is a standard production second model rifle and as such it does not have any caliber markings on the barrel breech or the brass cartridge elevator. The early standard production Model '76 was only offered with an octagon barrel and only in caliber .45-75 and so they did not bear the caliber markings found on later production and special order M1876 rifles. The overall condition of this rifle is NRA Excellent, it retains nearly all of its fine original factory blue on the octagon barrel, with about 80% deep original factory blue on the frame and tangs, even the dust cover retains much of its original blue finish. The only loss of finish is a few small areas on both sides of the frame where the blue has flaked off and turned a natural plum brown color as shown in the photos. The barrel and frame markings are perfect. The action is strong and smooth and works as new. The rifled bore is clean, bright and shiney from muzzle to breech. The barrel is fitted with an original folding ladder rear sight marked '1876' at the top of the ladder and a dovetailed german silver blade front sight. All screws are original and fine and the internal parts are all original. The walnut stocks are in superb condition as well showing all of their original factory oil finish with excellent metal to wood fit and absolutely no damage, no scratches, scrapes, cracks, etc. As usual, the cleaning rods are missing from the butt stock rod compartment. The case hardened hammer and lever still show some bright original case colors remaining. The gun actually shows no sign of field use and may even be unfired. Given its fine condition it must have been well cared for and properly stored away all these years. This is an exceptionally fine early second model 1876 Winchester rifle sure to satisfy the most discriminating collector.
