Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique COLT Model 1849 Pocket REVOLVER

Attributed to Private William Comings

Here we present an antique Colt 1849 Pocket Revolver, made in 1851 in Hartford, Connecticut. Over 280,000 of these were produced by Colt’s factory at Hartford by the end of the American Civil War in 1865. These were very popular and saw much use on the battlefield, on the home front and in the West. These were some of the smallest, handiest pocket revolvers of the time and the revolver that firmly established Colt’s company in the mid-19th Century.

This example is attributed to Private William Comings, a wagoner in the 15th NJ Infantry. According to oral tradition, William changed the spelling of his name to “Comins” to avoid being found when attempt was made to locate and identify him. This is supported by National Park Service records for which both names reveal identical specifics about rank & roll. Major Civil War milestones for Comings and his regiment include Gettysburg, Fredericksburg, and the surrender of General Lee. A regimental photo has “Comings” at the bottom, likely taken after the war during a reunion. Also included is a Union Army uniform button with a federal eagle on the front and Horstmann retailer markings on the back. The revolver itself was made in 1851, quite early, and bears a New York address. Cylinder scene is still partially visible.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. Serial numbers match. The bore is dark with good rifling. The grips are in good shape. The action on this revolver is strong. Here is an early Colt revolver with a lot of history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
