Antique SPRINGFIELD Charleville Pattern FLINTLOCK
War of 1812 Dated “1812”
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Charleville Pattern Flintlock Musket, manufactured in 1812 at Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. This was the first US musket made by a domestic armory and the first model made by Springfield Armory. It was designed very closely patterning the French “Charleville” Flintlock Musket that was used to by the colonists against the British during the American Revolutionary War.
This musket is faintly marked “US” just ahead of the hammer on the lock and “SPRINGFIELD” in a horizontal banner under a nearly obliterated federal eagle. The lock is dated “1812” at the rear. The top of the butt plate tang is marked “1810”. The left side plate is marked “THOMAS THOMAS”. The left side of the barrel is marked with US view and proof marks.
The overall condition is fair. The metal surfaces are weathered and regaining a gray patina. The markings are mostly legible. The stock has been repaired at the wrist. The rest of the stock has been sanded and is smooth and solid. Rear sling mount is absent. The bore is smooth and dusty. The action on this musket is strong.
