Description:
Original U.S. Cavalry Colt Single Action made 1878, Nettleton inspected. Action functions properly, solid notches and properly timed. Real nice bore, clear distinct rifling, bright with some scattered roughness. Patent dates do not show in the pictures but they are clear and completely readable. The ejector housing is the correct 1870s second style with the closed end. At some time the gun got into civilian production, the barrel was shortened to 5 1/2" and the gun was engraved (I have been told several possibilities but none are verifiable). The front sight is the proper style and attached properly. The engraving appears late 1800s factory style and is about 1/2 smoothly worn. The inside of the frame is very clean with no pitting. The grips are one piece pearl. I contacted Colt archives, and was told that factory letters only show the original shipment, no work done if the gun was returned to the factory later for modification. Factory letter included.
