You will be hard-pressed to find a better example of an original Springfield Trapdoor rifle. This example is nickel-plated with very good preservation of the finish over the last 135 years. Not only is the metal in excellent shape but so is the wood. This original stock has only handling marks but the finish is excellent. I strongly suspect this rifle was used only as a parade rifle; it has heard the Star-Spangled Banner so many times it could likely sing it by itself! Really I doubt the rifle has ever been shot as the bore looks new with perfect rifling. It is a cadet rifle which is the rarer type. Of 32500 rifles made that year only 2500 were cadet rifles. This remains a pristine example as you can see in the photos.
If if you want to shoot it you can but you will need to stick with the ammo it was designed for- black powder cartridges to military specs of the day. To this end I am including a book on these specs and how to reload so that the rifle shoots very accurately along with a custom Mould/handles for its bullets, some bullets that I cast for it, some tools you will need including the correct drill bit for enlarging the primer hole in your casings, some 45-70 casings as well as the reloading die set. Buy some primers and black powder and away you go.
