Description:

Here is a Civil War era Henry Lever Action Rifle, manufactured by the New Haven Arms Co. in 1863. The rifle has the Henry brass receiver, German silver blade front sight, folding ladder rear sight (missing the elevation slide) and empty sight dovetail on top of the receiver. The top barrel flat is stamped with the two-line patent date/address marking ahead of the rear sight and the serial number at the breech. This serial number is also stamped on the left side of the lower tang, stock inlet, buttplate and both buttplate screws. The buttplate is the First Style with rounded heel. The buttplate has a hinged brass trapdoor. A four piece hickory cleaning rod is included. The left side of the barrel and buttstock have a factory loop for a sling hook and sling swivel. Experts believe that most Henry rifles made before 1865 were privately purchased by individual federal soldiers who wanted the firepower offered by the 15-shot Henry repeating rifle.

Streaks of original blue finish remain on the barrel and magazine, otherwise a smooth dark brown patina. The fine original, untouched brass has a gorgeous aged appearance. The stock is great, and has the expected dings and scratches for its age. Mechanically excellent. A true piece of American gunmaking history.
