Description:
Smith & Wesson New Model No. 3 Target, caliber .32-44 gallery. Only 2600 of these target revolvers were produced between 1887-1910. This gun manufactured in 1893, was shipped on Feb. 21, 1893 and delivered to M.W. Robinson Co., New York City, NY. Two-line address with patent dates on the barrel, indicates an early model. Serial number 1921 stamped on the bottom of rear adjustable target sight, on the rear of the cylinder and on the butt of the frame, all matching. Standard 6.5" barrel length in blue finish. A .32 caliber gun bored and rifled on a .44 caliber frame. The Smith & Wesson factory referred to these as "Long Strap Models", and they were primarily used for indoor competitive match-shooting. The rifling in the barrel is clear and sharp and the fit and finish of the gun overall is excellent. The gun's lock-up is tight and mechanically, it operates perfectly. Original hand-checkered walnut "Fleur-de-Lis" grips are both in near-flawless condition and I have not ever removed them.
This revolver comes with a factory letter by Smith & Wesson historian Roy Jinks who states that it is in its original condition. The serial number on the butt of the gun has a "*" after it, indicating that the gun was reblued at the factory sometime prior to 1920 as this stamp was not used after that date. I recently inherited the gun, which was lightly oiled and stored in a bank vault by an uncle in 1920. It has not ever been fired since at least that time. Condition of the gun was considered by Roy Jinks to be in the very high 90's. There are some surface scratches on the frame just to the right of the hammer and marks where the cylinder has turned, also the very tip of the barrel has holster scuff marks, otherwise, it is in extremely clean condition but has never been professionally cleaned. An antique gun and no FFL is required. Buyer pays an additional $50.00 USD for handling and priority shipping. For sale to United States residents but I am unable to ship to California.
