BELOW IS AN EXCERPT FROM AN ARTICLE DATED OCTOBER 29, 1779 BY TOM HESTER OF THE STAR-LEDGER STAFF NEW BRUNSWICK In one of the boldest raids of the war so far, Lt. Col. John Simcoe, the notorious 27-year-old Tory ranger commander, and his cavalry burned the county courthouse in the village of Somerset Court House last night after torching a nearby church and 18 flatboats at Raritan. The 48-hour-long raid ended for Simcoe in the dirt of the Amwell road outside of New Brunswick this morning when militiamen, who were waiting in ambush, shot his horse from under him and he was knocked unconscious. Three of the 87 Queen's Rangers who rode with Simcoe were killed, and six others were captured with him. Simcoe owes his life to James Schureman, a New Brunswick militiaman, who prevented a vengeful militiaman from bayoneting him as he lay unconscious. Instead, Simcoe was propped against a tree by Jonathan F. Morris, a New Brunswick medical student, who bled him to help him recover from his head injury. Simcoe is detested by patriots for his willingness to use the bayonet and offer no quarter to the defeated. In turn, he considers Americans a "mean and despicable enemy." previous owner purchased this piece many years ago out of a Cape Cod estate-he became friends with Mr Neuman the fellow that wrote the book on horns. Mr Neuman mentored him as he amassed 5-12 horns over the years till Mr.Neuman deceased.
