Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique M1850 Foot Officer’s Sword

With Note About Ownership

Here we present an antique Civil War Battle Damaged Sword. According to accompanying note from the family, this sword was owned and used by First Lieutenant Moses Bean who was the Regimental Adjunct for the 4th North Carolina Infantry Regiment. Bean allegedly used this sword in the Battle at Appomattox, Virginia in April 1865.

A descendant of Moses Bean was the most recent owner of the sword. According to the family, Bean was wounded in the right hand when this sword was shot out of his hand. He was unable at the moment to retrieve his sword during the battle. Several days after the Confederates surrendered, he went back and found his lost sword. It was damaged, the top of the guard was broken off as was the arm at the back and the tip of the blade. He took it home to Salisbury, North Carolina and kept it until he died. It was then found by a descendant and put on display and passed through the family.

The National Park Service records for Moses Bean and his regiment are included. His record left out the “e” in his first name.

Overall condition as seen in photos.
