Description:
General Specs: Merwin Hulbert, Year 1880, .44-40
Serial Number: 2798

Merwin Hulbert & Co. was formed in 1876 and produced firearms through 1916.  Merwin Hulbert's innovation was a rotating barrel design which allowed the user to rotate the barrel 90 degrees and pull the barrel and cylinder forward to remove the fired cartridge cases.  The Merwin Hulbert revolvers were considered to be the strongest revolvers during the time period in which they were made.  During the twisting motion, the empty case could be extracted. Any intact cartridge would remain in the chamber due to the additional length of the bullet. In addition to this unique case extraction system, pressing an additional lever control when the frame was 'open' for extraction allowed the owner to completely remove the barrel. This not only facilitated cleaning but allowed the owner to swap barrels in less than 15 seconds without tools, allowing for a shorter 'concealed carry' and longer 'field' weapon in one. The combination of extraction and barrel removal required very precise manufacturing tolerances—incredible considering the tools of the day. Additionally, Merwin & Hulbert developed a nickel-chroming process superior to competitors, acting to protect the metal surfaces from corrosion and provided a durable, attractive finish. They made 4 different versions of this revolver; the Frontier, Pocket Army, Pocket, and a Small Frame Pocket.  This gun, sn2798 made around 1880, is the Second Model Pocket Army, the last version with a large, open-top frame and bird’s head grip.  This large frame open-top model is by far the most desirable of the Merwin Hulbert guns, as they made so few of them and for such a short period of time.  This revolver retains 85% of the original factory nickel finish, with all original screws, a moderately pitted bore with intact rifling, excellent original grips with little wear.  This revolver has been used but is in remarkable condition for its 139 years of existence!  This revolver was in use when the West was still wild and gun battles were common.  The case color on the hammer is 85% factory, and the case color on the trigger guard is 50% factory original, and the trigger retains 90% factory charcoal blue.  The various parts of the gun have all matching assembly numbers, everything original to the gun including the grips.  The gun functions flawlessly and wears the 3 ½” barrel.  How fun would it be to find a 7 ½” barrel to go with this package!  Go to Youtube to see how they work.  If you collect antique revolvers of the Old West, or specifically Colt or Smith and Wesson, you owe it to yourself to own this Merwin Hulbert 2nd Model Pocket Army.  It is an amazing piece of history. Thanks for looking, and don’t let this one get away!
