Description:
We are pleased to offer this 1961 S&W Model 15-1 engraved by Master Engraver Walter Shannon in August of 1970.  Walter Shannon ran a gun engraving business in the 1970's and 80's after he retired from the Sante Fe railroad.  He worked out of Waldron, Arkansas and Palestine, Tx. from what we have learned.  He was a certified "Master Engraver" and his style was very similar to the well known work of Cole Agee.  Mr. Shannon's work featured scroll engraving in a classic style, he did not do game scenes or portraits.  Mr. Shannon applied a signature stylized "S" on the bottom of the trigger guards of the guns he engraved, as well as stamping the grip frame with his last name and occasionally the date in which the work was completed.  In the 1980's his wife began engraving in her own style after learning the skill from him, and helped with the business.  Walter Shannon died in 1999 in Palestine Texas at the age of 80.  His work has really begun to be recognized and appreciated in the last ten years or so.  The Smith & Wesson Model 15-1 that we have for sale is stamped on the inside edge of the grip frame "Engraved by Shannon 8-1970", and is likely a piece from early in his career.  The trigger guard also has the stylized "S" that easily identifies the engraving as Walter's work.  Another interesting feature of this gun is that the butt of the gun is stamped "J. Shannon".  Walter Shannon had a son that was not an engraver named Jimmy Shannon.  This was likely his son's personal gun.  The gun was nickel plated after it was engraved, and some of the small parts were gold washed.  The nickel plating has really held up well over the years and is still very attractive with just a few small spots of plating loss.  The gold wash applied to the trigger, hammer, cylinder release, and ejector rod has faded and worn off over time except in the protected areas.  The bore in this 15-1 is excellent.  It is still bright with strong rifling with no signs of erosion or corrosion.  The cylinder bores are equally as clean.  The action works perfectly, turns "in time", and locks up nicely.  The trigger is light and breaks cleanly.  This custom engraved Smith & Wesson Model 15-1 is a beautiful piece by an engraver who's work is becoming more well known and appreciated by the day.  It would be an excellent addition to any collection and a sound investment.  Now reduced from $2550 to $1950 for a quick sale for the consignor!!
