Description:
With the Finnish Army adopting an improved design the of the Mosin Nagant M91 called the M27 in 1927, the competitive Finnish Civil Guard decided they wanted to adopt an surperior version of the M27 of their own design.  The Civil Guard acquired a M27 and had their engineers make some small and basic improvements to it that they felt would give them a better rifle.  The resulting design was named the M28 for the year of adoption and featured a shorter barrel than that of the M27.  This was a problem as the Civil Guard had no way to manufacture the barrels.  This problem was solved by reaching outside their borders to the Sig firm in Switzerland and contracting with them for production of the new barrel design.  They were to be manufactured in 10,000 rifles per lot with the serial number beginning with "1".  The first series ran to serial number 10,000, with the second series starting at 10,001.  Both the 1st and 2nd series rifles used all Sig produced barrels.  Later production was able to use Sako manufactured barrels.  The early production rifles also made use of altered existing M91 stocks rather than new production wood.  These early altered M91 stocks have a "SYT" in an oval stamped in the right side finger groove.  This particular example is serial number 10,053 making it an early second series rifle made in 1928.  It appears to be all original except for the bolt, which is the proper bolt but does not have a matching serial number.  This rifle shows wear and handling marks typical of a rifle that likely saw use in both the Winter War and World War 2.  All of the finish that remains is original, it has not been refinished at any point.  The bore in this rifle while dark, still shows strong rifling and should still be a great shooter.  All of the markings on the barrel are clear and legible.  The right side of the barrel has had the original district "S-number" (ID number to original district where rifle was assigned) lined-out but is still legible as well.  The import stamp from "Marathon Prod. Inc." is on the right side of the barrel behind the front sight, and it is very light and only visible under close inspection.  There is a close-up picture of this stamp provided in this listing.  The stock is all-original, and has the "SYT" stamp in the right finger groove.  It is free from any cracks or repairs, and is 100% sound.  As you can see in the pictures, the wood shows scratches, dings, and handling marks typical of an issued military rifle, but is in good shape overall.  All of the controls on this rifle work 100% as they were designed to, and the action on the rifle goes into battery perfectly.  This rifle is 100% functional.  If you have been looking to add a Finnish Mosin Nagant variant to your collection this M28 Civil Guard rifle would be an excellent choice.  These rifles have witnessed a lot of history thru two wars and have become quite collectible.  It should prove to be a good investment as these rifles have dried up on the import market, and also a lot of fun at the range or on the farm as a shooter.
