Description:
General Specs: Colt, Year 1885/1890, .44-40
Serial Number: 114454

The Colt Single Action Army was introduced in 1873 and has been in production through 3 generations since introduction, running through 2012 or so.  The most desirable and interesting SAA’s to collectors are the antique black powder frame guns built before 1900.  These guns were made in a dizzying array of calibers, finishes, named models, and barrel lengths.  Used by the U.S. Military from its inception in 1873 until about 1896, and carried by outlaws, lawmen, cattleman, settlers, and merchants well into the early 1900’s, the Colt SAA is an iconic part of the American West. The Colt we have here, sn114454 serial numbered in 1885 and shipped in 1890 (antique), is the “Frontier Six-Shooter” and was chambered in the .44-40 cartridge. The gunmen of the early West loved this gun as they could use the same cartridge in the Colt and their Winchester 1873 and travel with one cache of ammunition.  We have thoroughly examined this Peacemaker inside and out and have photographed all pertinent stampings and parts.  EVERY PART OF THIS GUN IS PROPER AND ORIGINAL TO THE GUN, including the awesome conditioned grips.  THIS COLT IS PARTICULARLY INTERESTING IN THAT IT HAS GOVERNMENT STAMPINGS ON A CIVILIAN SHIPPED PISTOL.   The frame is stamped with DFC, David F. Clark’s mark who was a government inspector for U.S. Cavalary revolvers.  At times, Colt made parts and revolvers for the military and the military returned the guns or parts as “surplus” or overruns for the contract.  These parts went through the military inspection process and received the “DFC” stamp on the frame and subsequently the parts were used to build civilian revolvers.  THIS IS ONE OF THOSE GUNS.  The “G” stamp on the butt and trigger guard was the Colt inspector stamp for government destined revolvers.  The right rear of the frame is stamped with a “u”, as is the rear of the cylinder.  Under the trigger guard on the frame is stamped the assembly number “905”, the same on the loading gate.  Upon removal of the ejector shroud we find the caliber marking “44” as well as original barrel blue in the protected area.  We know the 20th century history of this Colt and it spent a lot of time in a holster.  Upon close examination, we believe this Colt was originally shipped with a blued frame (as noted in the accompanying Colt Archive letter), which is very uncommon.  Blued frame Colt SAA revolvers did not have case hardened receivers or hammers, but instead the action was Colt blue, the top of the hammer was blued, and the sides left silver as machined.  That is the case with this Colt.  In addition, looking at the sides of the frame in protected areas, the top strap of the frame, the front of the frame, and the barrel under the ejector shroud, we see original Colt finish.  The gun appears to have become pitted in the holster and at a later date the past owner rubbed the pitted areas with cold blue.  The bore is very good, with light frosting, a few very light pits, and strong rifling remaining throughout.  The screws are all in good shape as well.  The action locks up tight as new and is perfectly timed.  This is the early black powder frame, highly desirable in this condition, with the rarities of U.S. Cavalry stampings and factory blued frame, and is a gorgeous example of a Wild West Colt Frontier Six-Shooter.  Colt Archives letter included with the purchase.  We will also include the 1930’s vintage L.A California made holster with the purchase.  Don’t hesitate to make the call.  You will not be disappointed with this revolver.  Thanks for looking!
