Description:
OLD "ALLEN AND WHEELOCK" BELT OR POCKET MODEL SIDE HAMMER REVOLVER... Allen and Wheelock made these side-hammer pistols in limited quantities between 1858 and 1861, with fewer than a thousand of each variation made. This one, serial number # 980 is .28 caliber with a 2 3/4-inch barrel. The metal is a Smooth dull mottled gray overall, but with some pinprick pitting scattered about.
The 1857 and 1858 patent dates are legible on the octagonal barrel side flat. Likewise, the Cylinder Scene of animals in a forest is Visible.
The Front Sight is in place and this revolver is 100% Original. The Loading-Rammer assembly, with its characteristic catch on the rear of the trigger guard Functions Fine but the cylinder does not index. The Grips are good.
These are nice pistols with a hint of that overly-clever Victorian Age engineering that we love. A good Civil War pistol from a classic American Arms Maker. Antique Pre 1898.
