Colt Bankers Special .38 colt new police/S+W 38 Ser# 342,453 MFG in 1931 Number 9842 on the butt .
This Colt was purchased by the us government and inspected by them also in 1931 and was shipped to the US Postal Service for the US mail service employes to have for protection on the Railroad Mail cars . They were required to have guns because they carried Mail, Money, Gold etc on the railroad mail cars . They were issued the little revolvers from 1931 untill about the mid 1960's when the revolvers were recalled and most were destroyed in a new jersey foundry in 1971. A few survived and the words r.m.s mail service was scrubbed off the back strap as this one was but the Ser# 9842 wasn't taken off the butt. Most found look like this one. Its functions great and is tight in single and double action. Bore is minty as well as the cylinder. grips are used but not cracked and very servicable. The finish is original and worn as it was carried dailey on the trains . The Badge is included with the gun ,and can be a hard find. A nice example of our past 1930's rail road mail history.
