Meyer, of Garnavillo, Iowa. At the age 41, he was appointed Captain on Aug. 8, 1862. of Company D the 27TH REGIMENT IOWA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY Resigned April 3, 1863 as noted in IOWA IN THE CIVIL WAR (Pages 1129,) That was perhaps the end of the story. Before that this civilian style holster and military belt was worn by Daniel E. Meyers as the leader of the Garnavillo posse and on its roster he is listed after the number #1. He likely worked closely with the "Garnavillo Horse Thief Detectivesanization" As referenced on page 226, of the book "GARNAVILLO Iowa Gem of the Prairie" . He was a member of the IOOF and the Masons. He also went to the Pikes Peak Colorado Gold Rush with a party from the Garnavillo area in 1860. His occupation by the U.S. Drafting Commission was listed as Sheriff & Jailer. He was also the keeper of billiard parlor and saloon. This Original holster was professionally handmade for a 1851 Colt Navy model with a 7 1/2 inch barrel. Made from medium weight leather and form fit to the Colt as was the practice of the day in the Civil War or Gold Rush era. The belt loop is sewn and riveted in place and would accept a 3 inch belt, but modified to assure no ride up when drawing. In other word I believe Sheriff/Capt. Meyer wanted to make it a fast draw rig. He did this by cutting a slot in the body of the holster that allowed no room for movement of the holster on the belt. He further modified the holster by putting a hole in the toe to accommodate leg tie down thong. See photos. The holster in good condition for its age, with tight stitching. Made to be worn on the right hip. Also included is a MODEL 1851 OFFICER’S SWORD BELT PLATE and belt. An early variation belt buckle. Cast brass eagle buckle with applied German silver wreath. This has narrow ½ inch wide hook and “365” bench mark on back. Beautiful mellow patina overall. The buckle measures 3 1/4" x 2 " to fit a 2" belt. This item is in good antique condition~please note that part of wreath is broken and the belt suffered from mouse chewing on the back, but displays well with the holster. (see photo) My second gen. Colt is not included. Payment Cash, postal money order, cashiers check, personal & business checks.
