Description:  This S&W US Army Model 1917 revolver is chambered for .45 acp and uses moon clips or alternatively 45 Auto Rim cartridges may be used.  This revolver is original although bears 'Arsenal Rebuild' stamps along with all matching numbers.  The serial number is 77XXX indicating it is an early 1918 manufactured revolver.  Subsequently, this revolver bears 4 digit stamp numbers which indicate it was likely sent for an 'Arsenal Rebuild'.  After the World War l, the M1917 was retired and became part of the country’s reserve stock. When the United Stated entered WWII, it was once again woefully under armed. The M1917’s were taken out of the reserve stock and refurbished. Many were cleaned and the original blued metal was parkerized which this appears to be the case (dull gray finish). Many retained their walnut grips but some were issued with plastic grips. This revolver features pearl grips (in excellent condition) which were often found on the 'Commericial' M1917's.   As evidensed by the markings 'US Army Model 1917'  on the butt above the lanyard loop and the underside of the barrel being marked 'UNITED STATES PROPERY'  both confirm this is a military issue M1917.  The frame, barrel, and cylinder all have multiple inspection / acceptance marks.  The revolver does have exterior finish wear. There is no visible rust or pitting. Bore is in great condition.  The frame and barrel have a  dull gray shine with the inside of the barrel showing very good rifling.

Other:   Most 'Arsenal Rebuild' / refurbished M1917’s were used by the Military Police and as training weapons, but it is estimated that some 21,000 made it to the various fronts. Many WWII collectors prefer the refurbished M1917’s to the same model used in WWI. Evidence of parkerization, buffing and arsenal initials indicates a refurbished pistol. After WWII, the M1917 was retired and many were sold to civilians (the pearl grips accordingly may be attributed to the subsequent sale to civilians).

The Model 1917 has a long history of military service. This Smith & Wesson is a must have for any collector wanting to add some history.  There is no box or papers accompanying this excellent 100 year old revolver.
