Description:
General Specs: Holland & Holland, Year 1972, 20 Gauge, 5lbs 9oz, IC/F
Serial Number: 40036

If you want to start a vigorous debate, ask a group of experienced double gun enthusiasts "what maker builds the finest double shotgun in the world?".   There will be a variety of educated opinions with vigorous defenders, but Holland & Holland will be included in the debate.  Building fine sporting arms since 1856, there is little doubt that H & H will always land in the top 5 BEST GUN makers in the world.  This gun, a ROYAL DELUXE sn40036 finished in 1972, is a fine example of their work and in near new condition with all factory finishes and configured the same way as it left the factory in 1972, complete with the original leather trunk-style case.  There is an official factory letter that will accompany the gun detailing how it was built and it has remained unchanged over the last 43 years.  The "DELUXE" designation is attached to special order guns with extra finish and features, ie, deep relief foliate engraved breech balls, self opening action, game scene engraving, upgraded wood, hand detachable locks, and special attention to every detail.  Each gun, no matter the maker or era produced, should be examined on its own merits to determine if it "measures up" to the scrutiny a BEST GUN should pass.  Details like wood-to-metal fit, metal-to-metal fit, quality of wood, checkering, and finish, barrel striking, and of course the engraving all add up to a representation of the finest hand-built shotgun man has created.  THIS GUN MEASURES UP.  Examine the photos closely and you will see as good a Holland as can be found.  At 5lbs. 10oz. and balanced 1/8" forward of the hinge pin with its 28" barrels and 15 1/4" LOP Turkish walnut stock, this fine Holland is the upland bird hunter's dream.  Chopper lump barrels are chambered for 2 3/4" shells and choked IC/IM (or .010/.028 restrictions as noted on the build sheet) and perfectly struck, retaining 99% blue, and nicely engraved.  The original owner's name is inscribed on the rib.  That can be removed and the top of the rib properly prepared and blacking touched up invisibly without having to re-black the barrels.  That is the only attention the gun should need.  We do bend stocks to your required specifications if needed.
