What a great little Ithaca 16ga.  According to Walt Snyder’s book, “The Ithaca Gun Company- From the Beginning”, there were only 45,000 New Ithaca Double (NID) model guns produced from 1926 through 1949. The Ithaca Gun Co. can be considered the most successful of all the vintage American double gun companies.  Why would I say that?  Consider they had 7 different models totaling over 420,000 total doubles produced.  That does not count the Western Arms, Lefever Gun Co., or Single Barrel Traps.  All told Ithaca was the most prolific of all makers at well over 1/2 million break action guns produced.  Parker made approximately 250,000 guns.    L.C. Smith was the only company to come close at 439,000 guns.  At that time the Ithaca was priced nearly the same, grade for grade, as the other makers but outsold the other makers by at least 50% during that time.  They offered more figured wood and more decorative checkering patterns than their competitors, delightful engraving patterns, and a gun that functioned the way it was expected to.  The buying public obviously considered the Ithaca the better gun at the time.  Ithaca's final rendition was considered their best and strongest model, called the New Ithaca Double, or NID as referred to today.  The NID has the strongest collector interest and it was a delightful gun.  This gun, sn465905 built in 1939, is a RARE FIND IN THAT IT RETAINS 99% VIVID FACTORY COLOR AND 99% FACTORY BLUE.  The 28" IC/M barrels make this an upland gunners dream, in that it is visually gorgeous and still affordable to carry afield.  The wood has gorgeous contrasting marble cake figure, well beyond the usual Grade 2.  Weighing just over 6 1/2lbs. and balanced nicely between the hands, she will do a great job on the sporting clays course or other clay target games as well.  Examine the photos closely and you will see how amazing this find is, with perfect screws, sharp clear engraving, vivid case color, fantastic figured wood with perfect checkering and no flaws...nothing not to like.  Ithaca graded double guns in smaller gauges and high condition are the very best investment shotguns as they are seriously undervalued in today's market.  A Parker GH (grade 2 in the Parker line up) 16ga. would sell for $8000 or more in this condition, if you could find one.  A great gun to shoot and enjoy while it increases in value.  Thanks for looking!
