Description:
This is a beautiful Weatherby Mark V, typical of the rifles built in West Germany in the late '50s thru the 1960's.  While the Mark V model initially was manufactured in the U.S., Roy Weatherby was unhappy with the quality of the parts he was receiving from the subcontractors here in the States.  He decided to go to Europe in 1957 in order to find a new supplier, and ended up contracting with J.P. Sauer & Sohn in West Germany.  The new parts would be made from forgings instead of investment casting, and the barrels would be hammer forged which was a superior method of making a high quality and accurate barrel.  With this contract in place Weatherby became the first commercial manufacturer to offer hammer forged barrels in the U.S.  Weatherby continued to use this W. German firm for manufacturing until 1970, when the manufacturing was moved to Japan by the Howa company.  These early Weatherby Mark V's have become classic icons in the American big game rifle segment.  The Mark V proved itself an attractive yet tough rifle that was accurate, reliable, and powerful.  This 1960's production Mark V is chambered in the iconic .300 Weatherby Magnum cartridge and is in very good condition overall.  The original high polish blue finish is still spectacular rating 97% with only a few small handling marks.  The 24" inch barrel has an excellent bright bore, with sharp lands and grooves in the rifling and no pitting or erosion visible whatsoever.  The original factory stock is in great shape overall, and the original gloss finish is still fully intact without cracking/spider cracks.  While it has small dings and dents from storage and use, it is still very attractive.  It features skip-line checkering, a rosewood forend tip and pistol grip cap with white diamond shaped inlay, sling swivel studs, and a factory Weatherby recoil pad.  The stock is free from cracks or repairs, and the length of pull is 13.5" inches to the end of the pad.  Everything on this rifle works 100% like the day it left the factory.  The bolt works smoothly and positively, locking up tight with no slop or play.  Both the bolt-mounted safety and the floorplate release work perfectly, and the trigger on this rifle is exceptional.  This Mark V comes with a set of Leupold bases already installed.  The new owner only needs to get a set of rings and a scope to have this rifle ready to go afield or to the range.  The .300 Weatherby Magnum cartridge that this Mark V is chambered for is readily available and is considered by many to be the most versatile big game cartridge available today.  The .300 Weatherby Magnum is capable of taking any big game animal on this continent as well as many of the dangerous game animals found in Africa and around the World.  These vintage West German manufacture Weatherby Mark V's have become quite collectible, and make excellent powerful hunting rifles.  This classy and attractive rifle would not only be a great addition to your hunting arsenal, but would also be a great investment.
