Description:
NICE APPEARANCE EARLY 1886 OCTAGON RIFLE IN .40-82 CALIBER WITH EXCELLENT BORE, #40XXX, MADE 1890. This rifle was probably put away and stored in excellent condition and then never inspected afterward. The barrel shows fine deep blue with excellent markings and the mag tube looks like some moisture got to it as it shows some even pitting along the middle section and some along a small section of the bottom of the barrel. It also appears the rust was wiped off with oil as opposed to being heavily buffed or steel-wooled. It is now all a deep, matching patina that blends nicely and looks fine. The receiver is an uncleaned deep brown with excellent blue on the bolt and still good blue on the loading gate. It has a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact matched with a small blade with ivory bead front sight. Side receiver crews are excellent and it looks like it might have had a tang sight on at one time as there is some case color apparent on the upper tang. Excellent forearm and butt stock with only one very small crack at the left side upper tang/receiver juncture- minor and all wood intact. Excellent bright bore that if not quite perfect is awfully close! The .40-82 cartridge was a very powerful .40 caliber round that is basically the .45-90 2.4” case gently tapered to .40 caliber. As the .40-65 was based on the .45-70 case, the .40-82 was simply a longer, more powerful cartridge that held a big for caliber powder charge. These are impressive black powder rounds when they go off! This rifle has a really fine, even appearance with a very hard to find great bore.
