“U.S.” Antique COLT Single Action Army .45 Revolver
Early “U.S.” Marked Specimen Made in 1874
Here we present an antique Colt Single Action Army Revolver, manufactured in 1874 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt “Peacemaker” was introduced in 1873 and has become one of the most iconic firearms in all of history, thanks to its widespread use by the U.S. military, civilians and, more recently, in Western films. Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt’s began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.
This would have been made with a 7-1/2 inch barrel for the U.S. Cavalry. It is government inspector marked throughout, with visible single letter initials on the trigger guard (A), barrel and back strap (A). The left side of the frame is marked “U.S.” The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.” This revolver had its barrel shortened toward the end of the 19th Century as many came back to Colt for servicing, repair and barrel shortening, which lead to the “Artillery” model designation.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces bear a mixed gray patina. The markings are mostly legible. The grips worn and smooth and solid aside from the hairline crack on the left panel near the frame. The bore is clear. The action on this revolver is strong. The cock notches on the hammer are worn so trigger pulls are quite light necessitating utmost care. Here is an early, martially marked Colt SAA!
