From 1968 to 1975 Garcia was the U.S. agent for Beretta products. During this period, guns made for Garcia import had a unique naming system. The Beretta Model 426E became the Garcia GR-4. The Beretta Model S56E became the Garcia BL-4. The Beretta SO3EL became the Garcia SO4 and the SO3EELL became the Garcia SO5. When Garcia was no longer in the picture, the GR and BL naming conventions disappeared.

However, just as the Garcia period ended, Beretta introduced a new grade of Side Lock gun specifically for competitive shooting and decided to call it the SO4. This has created a good deal of confusion over the years as an SO4 from the Garcia period is a much higher grade gun than the SO4 competiton grade gun made after 1975. To add further to the confusion, Beretta reused the SO5 model name after redesining the SO series in the mid 1980s.

So, a Garcia SO4 is actually a Beretta SO3EL, and a Garcia SO5 is actually a Beretta SO3EELL.
