Description:
The Colt Model 1917 was, like its Smith & Wesson counterpart, was produced to supplement the 1911 in service for World War I, when production of the famous semi-auto pistol was unable to keep up with demand. Like other nations during the Great War, the leadership of the participating armed forces quickly realized that a pistol was not simply a badge of office for an officer to be issued, but a fighting weapon for use in close combat. Trench warfare essentially guaranteed close-quarters combat (CQC) once the attacker reached the enemy trench line. As such, many countries including the U.S. were scrambling to issue as many pistols to the regular infantry as their production industry could produce. Due to the lengthy time needed to produce one (for the time), production for the 1911 could not keep up with demand. As such, a supplementary weapon in the same caliber (for logistical reasons) was desired. Colt had already produced the M1909 revolver on the New Service frame chambered for the .45 Long Colt. Building the same revolver in .45 ACP simply required moving the chamber shoulder rearward and cutting the back of the cylinder for use with half-moon clips (full-moon clips came after the war. Thus, the .45 Hand Ejector U.S. Army, Model 1917 was born. The Model 1917 will also chamber the .45 Auto Rim which is a rimmed version of the .45 Auto. The 1917 shown here is in good condition. Like many 1917s, the frame has been refinished. Original 1917s had a matte finish that was dark gray or black in color. This one currently sports a high-luster, blued finish. However, surprisingly, the original markings are still visible. The individual that performed the work was skilled as most re-bluing jobs leave marks all but obliterated. Some minor rust spots are present but are very small. Some light cleaning would likely fix this. The bore is in fantastic condition. The rifling is clear and there are no signs of rust though there is some old powder residue present. The condition means the bore was cleaned frequently, otherwise the then commonly used corrosive primers would have eroded the bore. Mechanically, the gun is in fine condition. The double-action pull is a little on the heavy side as would be expected on a military-issue revolver. The single-action pull is very light as befits a proper Colt revolver. The 1917 retains its lanyard loop and comes with a holster that is not marked US and is not likely the original. Also included are some moon clips (3 half-moon and 14 full-moon) and a cartridge removal tool for removing empty cases from the moon clips. The original grips were customized at some point leaving them with a unique appearance. The inserts appear to be some kind of jade or something similar in appearance. The 1917 currently sports very nice stag grips.
